High Cholesterol and its Management
Hyperlipidemia is a medical term used for abnormal levels of lipids in the body. Most common type of Hyperlipidemia is hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol). In some case its hypertriglyceridemia (high triglyceride) or mixed type where both cholesterol and triglyceride levels are high.
Cholesterol and triglyceride are indispensable structural and metabolic components of all animal cells. All body fluids contain cholesterol, may exist in a free state as well as in the form of esters.
All Hyperlipidemia result from a complex interaction between genetic pre-disposition and dietary indiscretion.
Diet which is rich in cholesterol or saturated animal fat tend to raise blood cholesterol while high carbohydrate intake or excessive alcohol consumption may increases plasma triglycerides.
LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) is named as bad cholesterol, elevated levels of which associated with an increased risk of CHD. Whereas HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) is named as good cholesterol protect against CHD.
The first line management of any primary Hyperlipidemia should always be dietary modification and lifestyle changes. This may be time consuming and difficult, but its importance should not be underestimated.
Ayurvedic approach for these problems primarily includes dietary restrictions, lifestyle changes, exercise and yoga, panchakarma therapy and herbal formulations which may consist of a single herb or mixture of many herbs.
Ayurveda focuses on correcting the metabolism rather than giving direct medication to decrease the cholesterol level in the blood.
The main herbs used to reduce cholesterol are:
- Garlic: A very common household ingredient, is a proven herb to lowering cholesterol level in the body.
- Ginger: This has made its place in every Indian kitchen; it helps to reduce cholesterol levels. Having a cup of ginger tea is best in maintaining cardiovascular health.
